§ 01Context

GoCloud is the unified portal Nationwide built to support enterprise-wide cloud migration. Three distinct user populations rely on it: developers, architects, and application portfolio managers. Each population has different vocabularies, workflows, and tolerance for technical depth.

§ 02The problem

There was no existing framework for the work. Tight regulatory requirements, three audiences with very different technical expertise, and a hard requirement of zero downtime during migration. Traditional enterprise portals lacked the clarity needed to walk non-technical users through complex technical processes without losing them.

§ 03Approach

  1. 01

Held stakeholder alignment sessions with GoCloud leadership and ran user interviews with nine participants across the three roles.

  2. 02

Built personas and workflow maps. Identified that the same content needed multiple entry paths because each role searched for it three different ways.

  3. 03

Applied a progressive-disclosure approach. The same content became reachable via prominent search with keyword filters (developers), a visual mega-menu with iconography (architects and APMs), and an alphabetical index (resolving terminology inconsistencies across roles).

  4. 04

Designed centralized documentation, role-based tutorials and training modules, community forums (RocketChat and AnswerHub), and a priority-based help-desk system. Built a working Axure RP prototype for testing.

  5. 05

Ran two rounds of usability testing with six participants. Surfaced the insight that trending search tags could double as system-status indicators when services went down, and shipped that pattern.

§ 05OUTCOME OF RECORD

Delivered a validated multi-pathway portal design with a working Axure prototype, three personas, and two rounds of usability testing. The trending-tags-as-status pattern carried into the launched portal.

§ 06Reflection

Multiple intuitive pathways to the same content beat one clever pattern that asks every user to think the same way. The simplest accommodation of audience difference is also the most respectful one.
